Job Title: Accountant

Department: Finance

Location: South San Francisco

Job Type: Full-Time 100% onsite presence during the training period and until the employee is fully acclimated to the role.

A municipality is seeking a detail-oriented, motivated, and service-focused Accountant to join the Finance Department. This entry-level professional accounting position plays a critical role in supporting day-to-day financial operations, including invoice approval , bank reconciliations , and assisting with budget adjustments .

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a solid foundation in accounting and a desire to grow within the municipal finance field. While prior experience in governmental or fund accounting is helpful, it is not required.

Key Responsibilities:

Invoice Approval & Review

  • Review and validate vendor invoices for accuracy, compliance with purchase orders, and appropriate coding.
  • Ensure invoices are approved by appropriate departmental personnel and processed in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with accounts payable staff and departments to resolve discrepancies or issues.

Bank Reconciliations

  • Prepare and complete monthly bank reconciliations for various City accounts.
  • Identify and investigate any discrepancies, reconciling items, or outstanding transactions.
  • Collaborate with other finance staff to ensure accurate recording of cash transactions.

Budget Adjustments & Support

  • Assist in preparing and processing budget amendments, transfers, and journal entries.
  • Support departments in analyzing budget-to-actual variances and reallocating funds when needed.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation for budget changes in compliance with City policies.

General Accounting Functions

  • Prepare routine journal entries and assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records and support audit preparation and compliance efforts.
  • Assist with financial reporting, grant tracking, or special projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of professional accounting experience preferred. Internship or public sector experience is a plus.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of general accounting and financial reporting.
  • Basic understanding of internal controls and account reconciliation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and familiarity with accounting software systems (e.g., Tyler Munis, PeopleSoft, QuickBooks).

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to learn and apply municipal accounting procedures and fund accounting principles.
  • Maintain a high level of accuracy, confidentiality, and professionalism.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a public agency or knowledge of fund/governmental accounting.
  • Familiarity with budget processes and public sector financial systems.
  • Interest in pursuing a long-term career in public finance or municipal accounting.
