What You’ll Do

On-Call Educators deliver engaging informal and interpretive programming to campers, families, students, and general visitors. Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to program delivery, supervising children ages 4-17, assisting program coordinators/supervisors in the supervision of youth and adult volunteers, and assessing/coordinating supplies and physical space needed for programs. Opportunities for On-Call Educators include but are not limited to holiday camps, after hour events, overnights, and other family programs, with most shift opportunities during holiday weeks and/or select Friday and Saturday evenings.

Day to Day Responsibilities (Limit to most important/top 10 duties if possible)

• Supervising campers and students ages 4-17

• Working with and supporting teen volunteers ages 14-17

• Preparing for, setting up, and delivering educational programs following established lesson plans and guidelines

• Providing guided facility tours to program participants

• Following established departmental and organizational policies and procedures

• Collaborating with other Learning and Engagement staff members

• Providing proactive, friendly communication and striving to anticipate guest needs and desires

• Communicating issues or concerns to the Learning Supervisor, or program Manager on Duty, in a timely manner

• Working in a cooperative manner with the animal care team and respecting the Ambassador Animal collection spaces, protocols, and equipment

• Providing program feedback and evaluations utilizing established methods

What We’re Looking For

Must Haves: (required for the role)

• Be at least 18 years of age

• Experience working with or around children

• Flexible availability during holiday weeks, evenings, and/or weekends

• Experience working in a formal or informal learning environment

Nice-to-Haves: (preferred for the role)

• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Biology, Zoology, Communications, Ecology, Environmental Education, or other related field

• Demonstrated experience delivering nature or conservation based educational content

Physical Requirements:

• Frequent standing and walking.

• Ability to lift and carry objects up to 20 pounds.

• Bending, kneeling, and reaching occasionally required.

• Frequent use of hands and arms to operate office equipment and manual tools.

• Occasional climbing of stairs.

• Visual ability to read, write, and operate standard office machinery.

• Environmental Conditions:

o Exposure to both indoor and outdoor working environments

o Minimal exposure to environmental hazards, although tasks may involve occasional noise or vibration.
